
Compressed air contains moisture and contaminants
Ambient air carries water vapour and particles. Compression concentrates these contaminants, while oil-injected compressors may add oil aerosols. Without suitable separation and treatment, moisture can damage tools, affect finishes, corrode pipework and contaminate products.
Define the required pressure dew point
The pressure dew point indicates how dry the compressed air must be. General factory air may be adequately served by a refrigeration dryer, while instrumentation, exposed outdoor lines or sensitive processes may require a desiccant dryer and a much lower dew point. Selecting a dryer without defining the target can lead to unnecessary cost or inadequate protection.
Apply correction factors
Dryer capacity is affected by inlet temperature, ambient temperature, pressure and actual flow. A dryer selected only from the compressor motor size may be undersized in hot conditions. Use the manufacturer’s correction tables and confirm the worst credible operating condition.
Select filters by contamination objective
A typical package may include bulk separation, coalescing filtration and particulate filtration. Activated carbon may be added where odour or oil vapour is a concern. Filter grade, pressure drop, maintenance access and drain reliability must be considered as one train.
Oil-free compression and filtered oil-injected air are not identical
Some applications can achieve the required quality with an oil-injected compressor and suitable treatment. Others require a genuine oil-free compressor because the contamination risk is unacceptable. The decision should follow the process specification and quality standard, not a marketing label.
