Start with the demand profile

The correct decision depends on how air demand changes over time. A fixed-speed compressor is designed to run at one motor speed and normally cycles between loaded and unloaded states. A VSD compressor changes motor speed to follow demand within its operating range.

Where fixed-speed performs well

Fixed-speed equipment can be a strong choice for stable, continuous base load close to the compressor’s rated output. It is simpler to evaluate and can have a lower purchase price. The risk appears when the unit is too large for the actual demand and spends extended periods unloaded while still consuming power.

Where VSD performs well

VSD is suited to plants with changing shifts, variable production, multiple intermittent users or demand that regularly moves through a wide band. Matching output more closely to demand can reduce unloaded running and stabilise system pressure. The saving is application-specific; it should be estimated from actual operating data rather than treated as guaranteed.

Minimum speed and control range matter

A VSD compressor cannot efficiently turn down to zero. Below its minimum stable speed it may stop, cycle or operate outside the most efficient zone. The selected unit must have a useful control range around the plant’s real minimum and maximum demand. Oversizing a VSD can therefore still create poor performance.

One large compressor is not always the answer

A multi-compressor plant may work best with a fixed-speed base-load unit and a smaller VSD trim compressor. Sequencing controls can rotate machines and match supply to demand. Redundancy is also important where a compressor failure would stop production.
