
What an air receiver does
A receiver stores compressed air, dampens pressure fluctuations, supports short demand peaks and can reduce excessive compressor cycling. It also provides a place for condensate to collect. It does not create air; sustained demand still has to be covered by compressor capacity.
Why a single rule of thumb is not enough
Rules of thumb can provide a preliminary range, but the correct volume depends on compressor type, control method, flow, pressure band and the duration of the event. A plant with fast pneumatic actuators may need local storage close to the point of use even when the main receiver is large.
Use the pressure band to calculate usable storage
Only the air released between the maximum and minimum acceptable pressures is useful for the event. A wider pressure band provides more usable storage, but the minimum pressure must remain above the process requirement. Wet and dry receivers serve different purposes
A wet receiver is installed before the dryer and can help cool air and separate bulk condensate. A dry receiver is installed after treatment and provides clean stored air. Some systems benefit from both. The arrangement should match the compressor control and air-quality objective.
Installation and compliance cannot be an afterthought
The receiver must have suitable pressure rating, safety valve, gauge, drain and statutory documentation. Access for inspection and drainage is essential. Imported or used vessels should not be accepted without verifying conformity, condition and required certification.
