List tools by real operating pattern

Record the rated air consumption of lifts, tyre changers, impact tools, sanders, spray guns, blow guns and any automated equipment. Note which tools can run together and for how long. Spray work and continuous sanding can dominate demand even when impact tools have a higher short peak.

Check pressure at the tool

Most workshop tools have a stated working pressure. Long small-bore hoses and restrictive quick couplers can cause a large drop. A compressor should not be oversized simply to compensate for poor distribution. Improve the main line, drops and hose selection first.

Match technology to daily hours

A small workshop with brief, occasional use may suit a piston compressor. A busy automotive, panel beating or fabrication workshop using air throughout the day will often benefit from a rotary screw compressor. Noise, heat and duty cycle should be considered alongside purchase price.

Treat air for the job

Tyre inflation and general tools may tolerate a simpler treatment package than spray painting. Paint quality is sensitive to water, oil and dirt, so the dryer and filters must be selected carefully. Drain points and pipe layout also influence contamination at the booth.

Allow for business growth without wasting energy

Include credible additions such as another bay, spray booth or CNC machine. Avoid buying a machine several sizes too large for a future plan that may not happen. A modular system, receiver storage or later second compressor may offer better efficiency and redundancy.
