
Pressure and flow are different requirements
Pressure is the force needed to operate the process; flow is the volume of air consumed. A machine can show acceptable pressure with no demand and then collapse when tools operate because the system cannot deliver enough flow. Both figures must be confirmed together.
Work backwards from the point of use
Record the minimum pressure each critical machine requires while running. Add the expected pressure loss across dryers, filters, valves and the distribution network. The compressor discharge set point should provide the required point-of-use pressure without an excessive safety margin.
Do not hide pipe problems with a higher set point
Small pipe diameters, long dead-end runs, clogged filters and undersized fittings create pressure loss. Increasing compressor pressure may mask the symptom but raises energy consumption and system stress. A ring main, larger headers, better drops or local storage can be the more economical correction.
Separate exceptional high-pressure users
If one process requires much higher pressure than the rest of the factory, consider a dedicated high-pressure compressor or booster. Running every consumer at the exceptional pressure and regulating down wastes energy and can increase leakage.
Check equipment ratings and safety
The compressor, receiver, dryer, filters, valves, hoses and pipework must all be rated for the maximum possible system pressure. Safety devices and statutory inspection requirements must be considered. Never increase a pressure setting beyond equipment ratings to chase performance.
