
Define whether the compressor is stationary or mobile
Plant air, workshop air and instrumentation may suit a stationary electric screw compressor. Drilling and remote construction can require portable diesel equipment. The power source, duty, mobility and location determine the starting technology choice.
Account for dust, heat and altitude
High ambient temperature reduces cooling margin, while dust loads intake and cooling surfaces. Altitude affects air density and compressor performance. Review the manufacturer’s site limits and derating guidance. Ventilation and clean cooling-air paths are essential even for a correctly sized machine.
Design for maintainability
A mine may be far from spares and specialist support. Service access, filter availability, oil specification, lifting points and transport routes should influence model choice. A low purchase price loses value quickly if routine maintenance is difficult or parts lead times are excessive.
Protect critical production
Where compressed air is production-critical, consider N+1 redundancy, standby capacity, bypass arrangements and stored air for safe shutdown. Separate critical instrument air from dirty or highly variable utility demand where practical.
Treat air for the environment and process
Dust control, condensate handling and dryer selection must match local conditions. Outdoor pipework and temperature changes can create moisture problems even after a refrigeration dryer. Instrumentation may require lower dew point and finer filtration than general tools.
