About the 3 000 Litre Air Receiver Tank
The 3 000 litre air receiver tank (3000 litre air receiver) is specified for heavy industrial operations with high and variable compressed air demand — including mining support installations, large automotive plants, steel processing, chemical plants and large food manufacturing facilities. It pairs with 75 kW to 110 kW rotary screw compressors and is commonly used as the main header vessel in multi-compressor compressed air stations.
A 3 000 litre receiver provides substantial system inertia — meaning your compressed air system can absorb large demand spikes without pressure drop, allowing compressors to operate in their most efficient load range. In VSD compressor systems, correct receiver sizing is especially important: too small a receiver causes hunting and rapid pressure cycling; adequate volume gives the VSD drive room to modulate smoothly.
The 3 000 litre unit is supplied horizontal with heavy-gauge saddle legs designed for concrete pad or structural steel mounting. All weld seams are radiographically tested on request. Standard supply includes SANS 347 pressure test documentation, full-size safety relief valve, 150 mm dial gauge, full-bore drain valve and 2½" BSP connections. Man-entry inspection port and internal ladder available on request for units requiring in-service internal inspection.
This size is also commonly used as a buffer vessel in nitrogen generation systems, breathing air systems and instrument air systems at mining and processing facilities. Contact us to discuss your specific application.

Why Correct Air Receiver Sizing Matters
Reduce Compressor Cycling
Adequate storage volume means your compressor runs fewer start-stop cycles — reducing motor wear, starter contactor wear and heat stress on the air-end. Screw compressors running in load/unload mode benefit greatly from correct receiver sizing.
Stable System Pressure
A receiver acts as a pressure buffer — absorbing demand spikes without immediate pressure drop. Critical for spray painting, pneumatic controls and precision tooling where pressure variation causes quality problems.
Peak Demand Capacity
Short-term demand spikes (impact wrenches, multiple guns firing simultaneously, large valve actuations) can be met from the receiver without the compressor struggling to keep up — provided the receiver is correctly sized.
Sizing Formula
As a general guide: Receiver volume (litres) = FAD (L/min) × 6 to 10. The 3000 litre receiver is suited for compressors with FAD up to approximately up to 20.0 m³/min.
| Compressor Size | FAD (m³/min) | Recommended Receiver | This Receiver Suitable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7.5 kW | ~1.1 | 300–500 L | ➡️ Larger than needed |
| 15 kW | ~2.2 | 500 L | ➡️ Larger than needed |
| 22 kW | ~3.6 | 500–1 000 L | ➡️ Larger than needed |
| 37 kW | ~6.0 | 1 000 L | ✅ Yes |
| 55 kW | ~9.5 | 2 000 L | ✅ Yes |
| 75–90 kW | ~13–16 | 2 000–5 000 L | ✅ Yes |
| 110–160 kW | ~20–33 | 5 000 L+ | ⚠️ Borderline |
