The 500 litre air receiver tank (500 litre air tank) is one of the most popular sizes for South African workshops and light manufacturing operations. It is the ideal pairing for 11 kW to 22 kW rotary screw compressors — the most common size range for automotive workshops, spray painters, panel beaters, tyre fitment centres and light food production.
A 500 litre receiver gives your compressed air system meaningful storage capacity — enough to handle peak demand spikes in busy workshop environments, absorb pressure variations and reduce compressor start-stop cycling. For spray painting applications, adequate receiver volume is critical: pressure drop during a spray pass causes inconsistent atomisation and surface defects.
The 500 litre receiver is available in both vertical and horizontal orientations — vertical for tight plant rooms, horizontal for low-ceiling installations or when the receiver is placed alongside the compressor skid.
All units are supplied with a SANS-compliant pressure test certificate, safety relief valve (factory set), glycerin-filled pressure gauge and manual drain valve. Internal surface is shot-blasted and primed to resist corrosion. External finish is industrial enamel. An automatic condensate drain can be fitted on request — recommended for spray painting environments to prevent water carry-over.
Factory-set SANS-compliant pressure safety valve. Prevents over-pressurisation. Set to working pressure ± tolerance.
Glycerin-filled dial pressure gauge (100 mm or 150 mm depending on size). Digital transmitter available on request.
Manual full-bore drain valve for condensate removal. Automatic timed or zero-loss drain available as upgrade.
Pressure test certificate and SANS 347 compliance documentation supplied with every unit.
Internal shot-blasted and primed to minimise corrosion. Epoxy internal lining available on request.
1" BSP inlet, 1" BSP outlet standard. Additional nozzles for gauge, safety valve and drain included.
External industrial enamel paint finish. Weatherproof external coating available for outdoor installations.
Structural steel feet for vertical orientation. Saddle legs for horizontal installation.
Automotive workshops, spray painting, panel beating, tyre fitment centres, light manufacturing, food production starter setups
Adequate storage volume means your compressor runs fewer start-stop cycles — reducing motor wear, starter contactor wear and heat stress on the air-end. Screw compressors running in load/unload mode benefit greatly from correct receiver sizing.
A receiver acts as a pressure buffer — absorbing demand spikes without immediate pressure drop. Critical for spray painting, pneumatic controls and precision tooling where pressure variation causes quality problems.
Short-term demand spikes (impact wrenches, multiple guns firing simultaneously, large valve actuations) can be met from the receiver without the compressor struggling to keep up — provided the receiver is correctly sized.
As a general guide: Receiver volume (litres) = FAD (L/min) × 6 to 10. The 500 litre receiver is suited for compressors with FAD up to approximately up to 3.8 m³/min.
| Compressor Size | FAD (m³/min) | Recommended Receiver | This Receiver Suitable? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7.5 kW | ~1.1 | 300–500 L | ✅ Yes |
| 15 kW | ~2.2 | 500 L | ✅ Ideal |
| 22 kW | ~3.6 | 500–1 000 L | ✅ Yes |
| 37 kW | ~6.0 | 1 000 L | ⚠️ Too small |
| 55 kW | ~9.5 | 2 000 L | ⚠️ Too small |
| 75–90 kW | ~13–16 | 2 000–5 000 L | ⚠️ Too small |
| 110–160 kW | ~20–33 | 5 000 L+ | ⚠️ Too small |
If your application requires more storage capacity, consider our 1 000 litre air receiver →
Pair your air receiver with a Trycomp screw compressor, refrigeration dryer and filtration, or browse our full air receiver range.
For a single spray gun at moderate use, a 500 litre receiver paired with a 15–22 kW screw compressor is generally sufficient. For high-volume booths or multiple guns, consider a 1 000 litre receiver. Always combine with a refrigeration dryer and coalescent filter.
Yes — the 500 litre receiver is available in both vertical and horizontal configurations. Specify your preferred orientation when ordering.
Standard connections are 1" BSP inlet and outlet. Additional tapping points (for safety valve, gauge, drain) are provided as standard.
Yes — all our receivers comply with SANS 347 and are supplied with a pressure test certificate. They are suitable for use in workplaces regulated by the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
